Corporate Biodiversity Management
Corporations face increasing stakeholder expectations that they manage and mitigate their biodiversity impacts. Leading corporations also recognize that strategic beyond-compliance investments in biodiversity conservation can generate competitive advantage. HGA helps corporations identify biodiversity risks and opportunities facing their operations, and to develop appropriate management and communication responses. Recent projects include:
- Rapid risk assessments for companies seeking to understand the biodiversity context of possible new sites
- Development of a Biodiversity Management Strategy for Rio Tinto’s proposed La Granja mine in Peru
- Guidance on the management of biodiversity impacts across multiple bauxite mining sites owned, operated, and proposed by BHP-Billiton in Suriname
- Development of a Biodiversity Management Strategy for Compañía Minera Antamina in Peru, which operates one of the largest copper and zinc mines in South America
- Strategic issue analyses on topics such as climate change, green building, genetic engineering, and third-party certification for multinational forestry companies
- Technical support for Gruponueva’s sustainability reports
- Design and supervision of a Polylepis reforestation program for Compañía Minera Antamina in the Peruvian Andes, in collaboration with Conservation International, The Mountain Institute and ECOAN
- Assistance to BP, American Electric Power, and PacifiCorp in the evaluation of their voluntary conservation investment in Bolivia’s Noel Kempff National Park
- Evaluation of the impacts of Shell Oil Company’s conservation investments in the Gulf of Mexico through National Fish and Wildlife Foundation
HGA staff are also founding members of Biodiversity Neutral Initiative, which promotes open standards for corporate biodiversity management.
